Aboveground tank removal

Removing a basement or outdoor aboveground oil tank costs $500–$1,500 — a few hours of pumping, cutting, and hauling, with no excavation and usually no lab.

What it is, and when you actually need it

An aboveground tank (AST) sits in the basement, a garage, or on a concrete pad outside — you can see all of it, which is why this job costs a fraction of an underground removal. The crew drains it, disconnects it, cuts it into sections if it won't fit through a door, and hauls the steel to a scrap or disposal facility. There's no digging, and unless oil has visibly reached soil or a floor drain, no soil sampling.

The usual trigger is a heating conversion: the house moved to gas or a heat pump, and a dead 275-gallon tank is now occupying basement floor space with oil still sitting in it. Other real triggers: an insurer flagging an aging tank at renewal, visible weeping or rust blistering at the tank's bottom seam, or a sale where the buyer wants the defunct oil system gone. What happens on the day

  1. Pump-out (30–60 minutes). Remaining oil and the water-sludge layer at the bottom are pumped into drums or a truck for licensed disposal. Usable oil can sometimes be credited or transferred; sludge always costs money.
  2. Disconnection (15–30 minutes). The feed line to the burner is cut and capped; the fill and vent pipes are disconnected at the tank.
  3. Cutting, if needed (30–60 minutes). A basement tank that came in through a bulkhead or a doorway that's since been narrowed gets cold-cut into sections. Crews ventilate the space; expect oil odor for a day.
  4. Removal and haul-away (30 minutes). Sections or the whole tank go out to the truck; the floor or pad is left broom-clean.
  5. Line capping outside (15 minutes). The exterior fill and vent pipes are removed or permanently capped and marked. This step is the one that matters most — see the warning below.
  6. Paperwork (same day to a week). A receipt or disposal record documenting where the steel and the liquids went. Keep it with the house records; it's what you'll show a buyer.

The uncapped fill pipe

The classic post-removal disaster is an exterior fill pipe left connected to nothing. Fuel-delivery mixups happen — a driver with the wrong address and a live-looking fill cap can pump a hundred-plus gallons of heating oil straight into a basement or crawlspace, and that turns a $500 job you finished last year into a remediation claim. Insist that the fill and vent lines are removed or permanently capped and that the quote says so in writing.

One thing to check before the crew leaves

Ask whether the house ever had a buried tank before the basement one — many oil-heated homes went through both generations, and the AST's paperwork does nothing for a forgotten tank in the yard.
